At Newcastle University Surgical Society, we have recently established a mentoring scheme with surgeons in the region. This scheme aims to encourage more opportunities for enthusiastic medical students to enter surgical theatres and learn about the specialities of their interest. Surgery has traditionally been an apprenticeship-based trade, and therefore it seems more than fitting to have mentors for our young surgeons to learn from and aspire to. This also presents the opportunities for extracurricular activities such as audits and research projects.
